Wetangula Will Be Kenya’s Third Most Powerful, Says Kenya Kwanza

Kenya Kwanza Coalition has on 20th August 2022 unanimously nominated Bungoma Senator-elect Moses Wetangula for speaker position.

The 3rd most powerful job in the country has been eyed by both Wetangula and his Azimio counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka for a long time now.

The decision by the Kenya Kwanza Alliance was long anticipated as there were talks stating that the continuing Senator would need to resign from his post as a member of the senate.

This declaration was made by the Amani National Congress Chieftain Mr. Musalia Mudavadi.

“I have a singular honour and privilege on behalf of Kenya Kwanza to announce that we have unanimously agreed that the speaker nominee for the National Assembly for the Kenya Kwanza coalition shall be Moses Wetang’ula. Thank you and congratulation on behalf of Kenya Kwanza,” Mudavadi said.

Illegal Poaching of Lawmakers

This comes as the war to control the 13th house continues. Azimio chieftain Raila Odinga, in relation to the struggle to control parliament chastised the president elect for allegedly poaching at least 20 lawmakers.

Wetangula vs Kalonzo

Mr. Wetangula will be contesting against Azimio’s Kalonzo Musyoka, where a contestant has to garner at least two thirds of the lawmaker votes cast, and if none of the contestants gain this, a face of will be carried out where the aspirant with the highest votes will be selected as the new speaker of the national assemby.



Who is the Current Speaker?

As it stands, Hon. Justin Muturi is the current speaker of the legislature until a new one takes up the role in the new government.

If successful, Moses Wetangula will be the third most powerful politician, after the President and his deputy. Below him, will be the chief justice.

Despite the power difference, all arms of the government still maintain independence.

Wetangula Will Have To Resign As Bungoma Senator-elect

Due to the nature of the constitution, the residents of Bungoma county will be subjected to a by-election in the next few weeks, so as to choose a new senator.

Moses Wetangula has two eggs in one basket as he risks losing the senator seat and being speaker if Kalonzo Musyoka beats him to the race of supremacy.

“I’m going to be the National Assembly Speaker, the third in command in the country, I want to assure our Kenya Kwanza we have the numbers… Those who decamped to our team saw this country is headed in the right direction,” he said.
