The Secretary General of ODM Mr. Edwin Sifuna, on Wednesday 10th August, got flagged by twitter following release of unverified provisional results in his twitter account. In the tweet that was posted during the day, the image showed that Raila Odinga had won the elections with 51.96% votes while William Ruto trailed behind him with 47.28% of the total votes cast.
The information was regarded as false and misleading because at the time of posting the tweet, IEBC had only tallied votes from 11,000 polling stations, out of the total 46,000+ polling stations in Kenya.
Upon noticing of the tweet, the social media platform flagged Sifuna’s tweet, stating that the official results had not been released by the Independent electoral and boundaries commission, IEBC.
Despite this, it is important to note that the tallying of electoral votes is free to anyone in the country, and this has led to several individuals and organizations not affiliated to the government to carry out their own election tallies.
The third parties access the Form 34As from the IEBC portal and then proceed to count the votes themselves. This freedom of tallying is aimed at promoting transparency in the electoral process, thus conduction of free and fair elections.

Dennis Itumbi, is an example of a third party who had his own tallying center.
On the same Wednesday, Mr. Itumbi at 2.38PM started a live stream where he revealed his team that was carrying out the tallying process.
This serves to explain why there are different numbers in every organization.
Despite the different results from different organizations, citizens of the republic of Kenya are emphasized to only trust poll results from the IEBC.
Announcing of the presidential winner, moreover, can only be done by the IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.
