Days after the Supreme Court ruled against Raila Odinga’s petition has seen major political figures shift allegiance to Kenya Kwanza, a move that has been described as utmost betrayal by the Azimio la Umoja remnants.
Parliamentarians deflecting to Kenya Kwanza
The two parliament houses – the National Assembly and the Senate – both elected speakers who were fronted by the Kenya Kwanza coalition, courtesy of their growing numbers. At the end of the 2022 general election tally, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition had majority of the parliamentary seats but one thing led to another and as per 9th September 2022, the Ruto-led coalition controls both houses, leaving Azimio elected members confused.
Ongwae shifts allegiance
On Wednesday 9th, former Kisii County governor shifted loyalty to Kenya Kwanza, a move that was highly welcomed by the said coalition. Images on social media show the President-elect William Ruto and Ongwae, amongst other political figures taking photos outside Ruto’s Karen residence.
This information came as a shock to many Kenyans, especially his Kisii supporters as he was elected as governor 10 years ago through Raila’s ticket. His decision to join team-Ruto has led to many Kenyans concluding that there are no permanent enemies in politics but rather, permanent interests.

Ledama Olekina’s online tantrums
Narok County Senator-elect Ledama Olekina, has in relation to this, branded Hon. James Ongwae a greedy politician. Being a strong Azimio member and supporter, Hon. Ledama took his fury to twitter where he asked the retired governor to leave the political career honorably.
“You have been Governor for 10 years, you squandered public funds … during the campaigns you supported Azimio but today your greed is taking you to Kenya Kwanza … bure kabisa get some balls and retire honorably and enjoy your loot!” said Ledama through his twitter account.
Hon. Simba Arati took over from the retired governor and in less than 100 days in office, has managed to expose and sack over 820 ghost workers that had evaded Hon. James Ongwae’s gubernatorial scrutiny. Mr. Arati won the gubernatorial seat through the Azimio coalition ticket.
