Narc Kenya party leader and former running mate of Raila Odinga has today stated that she was not satisfied by the verdict delivered by the Supreme Court of Kenya (SCOK) on 5th September 2022. In the verdict, the Apex Court led by Chief Justice Martha Koome upheld William Ruto’s win to be the 5th president of the Republic of Kenya.

9 petitions were filed, and all were disregarded by the Court on grounds that evidence was not watertight. Martha Karua had previously stated that she was confident that Azimio had won the presidential seat and it was up to the law to grant Raila Odinga his allegedly ‘delayed’ win. To Azimio coalition’s dismay, Raila failed yet again, making it a 5-time loss.

Martha does not understand how Ruto won

Speaking at her Kimunye home, the senior counsel maintained that she did not understand how Ruto won the election. She stated that she is pondering taking the case to the East African Court of Justice, purely to seek further interpretation of the Supreme Court verdict for the election that was held on the 9th August 2022.

According to her, very many things surrounding the just concluded elections don’t make sense to her. She proceeded to say that she is far from accepting that Azimio was actually beaten in the polls fair and square.

After the Supreme Court verdict, Martha and her counterpart Raila Odinga had, through their social media accounts, posted that they respect the Apex court ruling, but disagree on their findings. In addition, Raila Odinga, in a public press briefing, expressed that Azimio is far from dead. He stated that he accepts the Judicial ruling.

Martha Karua’s explanation

“Nairobi ambayo inatajwa ni yao, ndio gavana ni wao, lakini majority of MCAs ni Azimio…kura nyingi za Nairobi za President zilikuwa ni Azimio…hiyo mahesabu haziingiani. Kwa hivyo siwezi nikaamini tulishindwa, lakini kwa sababu korti imetoa amri, Kenya iendelee kulingana na vile korti iliona. Hiyo ndio rule of law na democracy,” she stated.

“Lakini kuvunjika kwa mwiko sio mwisho wa upishi…hakuna mahali ingine tunaweza kuenda kubishana kiti ya urais, lakini tunaweza peleka mahali pengine ndio tuelewe kweli korti yetu ilitupatia haki. Sasa sio mambo ya uchaguzi, mambo ya haki, vile nilienda wakati ule mwingine.”

The East African Court of Justice

Martha Karua’s thoughts to take the case further to the East African Court of Justice have come as a surprise to many. She made the statement on 10th September 2022. This comes after she posted Kenny Rogers lyrics on her twitter account, to signify that she had not lost hope.

“Something inside so strong I know that I can make it, though you’re doing me wrong so wrong, you thought that my pride was gone, oh no There’s something inside so strong, Something inside so strong…”

A break from politics

Despite this, she noted that she is going on a political sabbatical, and that Azimio supporters will have to contend with the ruling of the Judiciary.

A comprehensive report will be provided by the Supreme Court so that all interested parties can understand why Azimio failed to convince the courts to nullify the presidential election.

In regards to this, William Ruto is set to be sworn in as the president of Kenya on Tuesday 13th September 2022. The date has temporarily been turned into a public holiday.
