Less than 24hrs to the general elections, IEBC materials were on Monday 8th August 2022 destroyed in several polling stations. This comes after the IEBC said that there will be no extra voting material to prevent election irregularities.

The materials were allegedly destroyed by the public in the Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County. The materials were in transit to Igambang’ombe subcounty when the unmentioned individuals vandalized the election materials.

With elections expected to take place from the morning of 9th August 2022, it is not clear how the problem will be solved.

From images gathered and presented by The Star, election materials that included security seals and papers were seen lying on the ground.

No clear information has been revealed as to how or why the materials were destroyed. However, the Returning Officer for Tharaka Nithi Mohammed Raka briefed the media on Monday saying that there was a mix-up in the distribution of the election materials. He stated that material that was supposed to be transported to Fafi had been transported to Chuka.

“There has been a mix-up where ballot papers for Fafi ward have been found in Chuka. We have informed our Nairobi officer and they are addressing the matter,” he said.

Raka revealed that the right ballot papers would be brought to the Chuka by a chopper and the right ones will be sent to Garissa.

“So far this is the only incident that has been reported countrywide and it is being sorted right away,” he added.

The police Boss in Tharaka Nithi has assured the residents of the area that the police are looking into the matter and after investigation, they will know exactly how the materials were destroyed.

The election distribution began on the same Monday and it is expected that the situation will be resolved.
